Accused nabbed during naka checking at Heerpora; police say crackdown on narcotics across Kashmir will intensify

Shopian, January 16: In continuation of its sustained drive against drug trafficking, Jammu and Kashmir Police in Shopian have arrested a drug peddler and recovered five kilograms of cannabis-like substance during a naka checking operation at Dachnoo, Heerpora.
Officials said a police party from Police Station Heerpora, while conducting routine checking, noticed a person moving under suspicious circumstances. The individual was tactfully apprehended and, upon search, cannabis-like substance weighing approximately 5 kg was recovered from his possession.
The accused has been identified as Aslam Kalas, a resident of Devpora, Shopian. Subsequently, a case FIR No. 06/2026 under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Heerpora. Further investigation is underway to trace both forward and backward linkages and to uncover the wider network involved in the illegal drug trade.
Police officials said the arrest is part of a broader anti-narcotics अभियान across Kashmir, where law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance, naka checking, and intelligence-based operations. In recent months, multiple drug peddlers have been arrested in districts such as Pulwama, Anantnag, Baramulla and Srinagar, with recoveries ranging from cannabis and charas to heroin and pharmaceutical drugs.
Authorities have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly among youth, calling it a serious social and public health challenge.
Reiterating its commitment to a drug-free society, Shopian Police urged citizens to cooperate and share information related to drug abuse or peddling.
