Udhampur Police Rescue 12 Stranded Amid Heavy Snowfall in Basantgarh

Brave officers trek through deep snow to save women and children; “Successful rescue under challenging conditions,” say officials

Jammu, January 23: The Udhampur police in Jammu and Kashmir successfully rescued 12 people, including women and children, who were stranded in heavy snow in the upper ridges of the Basantgarh area on Friday, officers said.

According to police, a distress call was received at the Sang police post after the group became trapped in the snow-bound Chochru Galla region, forcing officers to navigate treacherous terrain and blizzard-like conditions to reach them. It took the team nearly three hours to trek through deep snow and dense fog before locating the stranded individuals.

Sharing details of the operation on social media, the Udhampur Police posted: “Udhampur Police successfully rescued 12 persons stranded due to heavy snowfall in upper ridges of Basantgarh area.”

Videos shared by the department show police personnel guiding the group — including elderly women — down the snow-covered hillside, ensuring their safe descent and evacuation.

After the rescue, the individuals were brought to safety at the Police Post Sang, where they were provided with food, warm shelter, and basic medical assistance, officials said.

Local authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude and snow-affected areas and to strictly follow weather advisories as heavy snowfall continues to impact higher reaches of the region.
