🚨 Tragedy on Snowbound Kanipora–Manloo Road: Woman’s Last Rites Delayed, Locals Forced to Clear Route Themselves
Snow blockade, alleged official inaction, and a community’s struggle as vital link road remains cut off
Syrier Dar:
Heavy snowfall has turned the Kanipora–Manloo link road into a stretch of hardship and grief, after prolonged road closure reportedly delayed the last rites of a local woman and left residents battling the crisis on their own.
Saja Begum, a resident of Kanipora, passed away during the severe weather, but the snow-blocked road created major obstacles in carrying out her funeral rites. Locals said they faced immense difficulty transporting her body due to the impassable condition of the only connecting road.

Residents allege that despite repeated calls to the administration — including the concerned Junior Engineer (JE) and the Assistant Executive Engineer (AExEn) of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department — no help arrived. With no snow clearance machinery deployed, the community says they were left helpless at a deeply emotional time.
In a desperate move, locals pooled money and hired a JCB machine themselves to clear parts of the road. Villagers worked together in freezing temperatures to make temporary passage possible. “It is heartbreaking that even in such a moment of grief, we had to arrange everything on our own. We kept calling officials, but no one responded,” said a local resident.
Locals say this is not the first time winter snowfall has exposed gaps in preparedness and response. They are now demanding immediate intervention from higher authorities and a reliable winter action plan to ensure that such a situation does not repeat.
For the people of Kanipora and Manloo, the snow-covered road has become more than an inconvenience — it has become a symbol of neglect, felt most painfully during a moment of personal and collective loss.
