Chief Education Officer Shopian spearheads initiative to promote traffic discipline and safe road behaviour among citizens
Syrier Dar:
Shopian witnessed a meaningful and socially relevant initiative as Road Safety Awareness Week was organised under the aegis of the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Shopian, aiming to spread awareness about traffic rules and responsible road behaviour. As part of the week-long programme, a road safety rally was successfully conducted by New Green Land School, Shopian, drawing appreciation from the public and local authorities alike.
The rally saw enthusiastic participation from students who displayed remarkable discipline and commitment towards the cause. Holding colourful placards and banners, the students marched through the main streets of the area, attracting the attention of pedestrians, motorists, and shopkeepers. The placards carried clear and impactful messages highlighting key aspects of road safety, including the importance of wearing helmets, using seat belts, obeying traffic signals, avoiding rash and drunk driving, and respecting pedestrians.
Teachers and school staff accompanied the students throughout the rally, ensuring their safety and guiding them at every step. The presence of educators reinforced the educational value of the event, underlining the role of schools in shaping socially responsible citizens. The rally was conducted in an orderly manner, reflecting the discipline instilled in students by the institution.
Officials from the Education Department stated that Road Safety Awareness Week is observed with the objective of sensitising students and the general public about the rising number of road accidents and the need to strictly adhere to traffic norms. “Children are powerful messengers of change. When students speak about road safety, the message reaches households and communities more effectively,” an official remarked.
Local residents appreciated the initiative, noting that such awareness programmes are essential in districts like Shopian, where traffic congestion and increasing vehicle numbers have raised safety concerns. Many commuters were seen slowing down their vehicles to read the messages on the placards, while some motorists acknowledged the students with gestures of support.
