Mostly Dry Weather Likely in J&K Till January 22, Cold Nights to Persist

MeT predicts falling night temperatures, dense fog in Jammu plains over next five days

Srinagar, January 9, 2025: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast largely dry and stable weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir till January 22, ruling out any major weather disturbance during the period. While daytime conditions are expected to remain relatively stable, cold nights and fog—particularly over the plains of Jammu—are likely to continue in the coming days.

According to the MeT Department, weather across the Union Territory is expected to remain partly cloudy from January 7 to January 15. However, brief spells of generally cloudy conditions may occur on January 16 and 17, with the possibility of light rain or snowfall at isolated locations in the Kashmir division.

The outlook further suggests that January 18 and 19 will witness partly to generally cloudy skies, while January 20 may bring light snowfall at isolated higher reaches of the Kashmir region. Weather conditions are again expected to improve from January 21 and 22, with partly cloudy skies and no significant precipitation forecast.

“The overall weather pattern indicates a prolonged dry spell, with no major system affecting the region till January 22,” the MeT Centre said, adding that the absence of significant snowfall may have implications for winter tourism and water resources.

The department has also issued an advisory warning of a noticeable drop in minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir till January 10. Thereafter, night temperatures are likely to rise marginally by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist over the plains of Jammu division. The MeT Department has cautioned that moderate fog is likely to prevail, with dense fog at isolated locations over the next five days, significantly reducing visibility during early morning and late evening hours.

Authorities have advised commuters, travelers, and motorists to exercise caution, particularly during fog-prone hours, and to follow traffic advisories to avoid mishaps.

While the stable weather may bring temporary relief from harsh winter conditions in some areas, meteorologists noted that continued dry spells during peak winter could affect snow cover in higher reaches, which is crucial for sustaining water resources during the summer months.
