J&K | CM Omar Abdullah Calls Uttarakhand CM Over Brutal Assault on Kashmiri Shawl Seller

Omar urges strict action, safety of J&K residents; Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami assures FIR and legal steps

Srinagar, Jan 29: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to press for strict action following the assault on a young Kashmiri shawl seller in Uttarakhand, officials said.

The attack on the youth, reportedly around 18 years old, occurred in the Vikasnagar area of Dehradun district, where he was selling shawls when a group allegedly assaulted him. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) and other leaders condemned the incident as deeply disturbing, saying the victim sustained serious injuries.

In an official statement posted on X, the Chief Minister’s office said Omar Abdullah urged Dhami to ensure strict action against the perpetrators of the assault and to protect the safety of Kashmiri residents and traders working in Uttarakhand.

Responding to the J&K CM, Dhami assured that strict action would be taken, including the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) in the case, and that the safety of Jammu and Kashmir residents in the state would be safeguarded.

In separate posts on social media, Omar Abdullah said such attacks were “unacceptable and must stop”, stressing that while Kashmir is an integral part of India, Kashmiri citizens should not live in fear while working in other parts of the country. He added that his government will step in where necessary to prevent repetition of such incidents and urged the Union Home Ministry to sensitise state administrations on protecting vulnerable communities.

Political figures, including CPI(M) MLA M.Y. Tarigami and JKSA convenor Nasir Khuehami, echoed outrage over the assault. They highlighted the pattern of violence against Kashmiri traders and insisted on accountability and stronger protective measures.

The development has drawn wider attention amid broader concerns over the safety and dignity of Kashmiris pursuing livelihoods beyond the Union Territory.
