Four-year undergraduate course aligned with NEP 2020 aims to strengthen fashion and textile education
Srinagar, Jan 29: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new undergraduate programme, B.Sc. Fabric and Apparel Design, under its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) framework, starting from the January 2026 admission cycle.
The newly launched programme is designed to offer comprehensive academic and practical training in fabric production, apparel manufacturing, garment construction, textile science, quality control, supply chain management, and product development, with a strong emphasis on fashion design and industry-oriented skills.
Director, IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar, Dr. A.H. Rizvi, said the programme has been developed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes a flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-based approach to higher education.
“This programme is aimed at equipping learners with technical expertise and a clear understanding of manufacturing processes relevant to the fabric and apparel sector, including the clothing and boutique industry,” Dr. Rizvi said.
He added that the course structure blends theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, enabling students to meet the evolving demands of the fashion and textile industry. The programme also encourages creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among learners.
The B.Sc. Fabric and Apparel Design programme is duly recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), making it equivalent to regular university degrees. Graduates of the programme will be eligible for employment opportunities in both government and private sectors, nationally as well as internationally.
According to IGNOU officials, the programme opens up diverse career pathways, including roles such as Textile or Fabric Designer, Fashion Designer, Apparel Pattern Maker or Technical Designer, Fashion Illustrator, Fashion Merchandiser, Visual Merchandiser, and Fashion Educator or Trainer. Additionally, the course provides a strong foundation for those aspiring to launch their own ventures or start-ups in the fashion and apparel industry.
The programme will be offered from the January 2026 admission cycle, which is currently underway. Eligible candidates interested in pursuing the course can apply online through IGNOU’s official admission portal.
