Light motor vehicles allowed between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm as authorities restore vital mountain connectivity

Shopian/Rajouri: The historic Mughal Road, a crucial mountain corridor connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Pir Panjal region, has been reopened for vehicular movement after remaining closed for several days due to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches. The reopening has brought much-needed relief to commuters, traders, and residents of remote areas who rely heavily on the road for daily travel and the transportation of essential goods.
The road had been shut after continuous snowfall led to significant snow accumulation at higher altitudes, making travel hazardous. Slippery conditions, poor visibility, and sub-zero temperatures had disrupted normal life, particularly in border and mountainous villages that depend on the Mughal Road as a key link between south Kashmir and the districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
Following an improvement in weather conditions, road maintenance and snow clearance teams were pressed into service to restore the route. Snow clearance machinery was deployed at multiple vulnerable stretches to remove accumulated snow and ice. Officials said that the clearance operations continued for several days to ensure that the road surface was safe for vehicular movement.
After thorough inspection and assessment of road conditions, the authorities decided to reopen the Mughal Road for traffic with certain restrictions in place. As per the advisory issued, light motor vehicles (LMVs) are permitted to ply on the road during a fixed time window from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, when weather and visibility conditions are relatively stable. Movement outside these hours has been restricted as a precautionary measure to ensure commuter safety.
