Gurez, Drass, Zojila, and Sadhna Pass see fresh accumulation; tourists and locals advised caution as temperatures dip
Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall across several higher reaches on Friday late afternoon, as winter conditions intensified in the region, providing relief to alpine areas and adding to the seasonal snow cover.
According to officials, Gurez Plains received around two inches of snow, while Drass recorded about one inch. Zojila Pass also witnessed nearly two inches, impacting movement along the strategic mountain route. Sadhna Pass, which connects parts of north Kashmir, received between two and three inches of snowfall, further strengthening the winter snowpack.
Popular tourist destinations saw lighter snow activity. Gulmarg recorded approximately one centimetre of fresh snow, while Doothpathri and Sonamarg experienced light flurries during the day.
Weather authorities noted that the snowfall largely remained confined to higher elevations, with lower areas of the Kashmir Valley staying mostly cloudy and cold. Night temperatures are expected to drop further in snow-covered regions.
Officials have urged travellers, transporters, and local residents in higher reaches to exercise caution, particularly on mountain passes, as fresh snow may lead to slippery conditions. Forecasters also warned that further snowfall is likely in the coming days as western disturbances continue to affect the region.
