Food Safety officials urge public to avoid rumours, say surveillance drives will continue

Srinagar: Food safety authorities on Friday confirmed that egg samples collected from various parts of Srinagar have been found safe for consumption and fully compliant with the standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The clarification comes amid concerns and unverified claims circulating on social media regarding the quality of eggs being sold in local markets.
Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Srinagar, Yameen ul Nabi said that eight egg samples were collected from different supermarkets and wholesale outlets across the city as part of routine food safety surveillance. “The results were received late last evening, and all samples have been declared of standard quality,” he said.
According to officials, the samples—both loose and packaged—were lifted nearly 20 to 22 days ago during inspection drives aimed at monitoring the safety and quality of commonly consumed food items. The testing process involved laboratory analysis to check for compliance with FSSAI norms related to freshness, contamination, and overall quality.
“The laboratory tests confirm that eggs available in Srinagar markets meet all prescribed safety standards and are fit for human consumption,” Nabi said. He added that the samples were collected from multiple locations across the city to ensure representative testing and accurate assessment of the food supply chain.
The official also appealed to the public to exercise restraint while sharing information online. “People should avoid circulating unverified videos and messages that can create unnecessary panic among consumers,” he said. He urged media outlets to rely on verified sources and factual reporting rather than amplifying rumours that could mislead the public.
Food safety officials emphasized that regular quality surveillance drives are an ongoing process to safeguard public health. Such inspections, they said, help maintain consumer confidence and ensure that food items sold in markets meet required safety norms.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to strengthening food safety enforcement and assured residents that strict action would be taken against any violations detected in future inspections. The department said it will continue monitoring food items across Srinagar to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic products for consumers.
