Shopian, January 16: The Education Department Shopian on Thursday organised a district-level seminar on road safety titled “School Leadership Programme on Road Safety” at Government Degree College (GDC), Shopian, aimed at sensitising school leaders about their critical role in promoting road safety awareness among students and the wider community.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Shopian, Dr Zakir Hussain Faaz, who attended the programme as the Chief Guest, inaugurated the seminar and highlighted the alarming rise in road accidents. He attributed many fatal mishaps to lack of awareness, negligence, and non-adherence to traffic rules, and stressed the need for collective efforts to address the issue. He appreciated the Education Department for taking a proactive initiative by involving school leadership in such an important social cause.
Speaking on the occasion, Chaitanya Giri (IPS) underlined the importance of combining strict enforcement with sustained awareness. He emphasised the responsibility of road users, particularly the youth, and called for discipline, patience, and strict adherence to traffic laws. Sharing real-life examples, he cautioned against reckless driving and highlighted the serious consequences of traffic violations.
Chief Education Officer (CEO) Shopian, Bashir Ahmed Shah, emphasised the pivotal role of teachers and school heads in shaping the behaviour and attitudes of future generations. He said students learn not only through academic lessons but also by observing the conduct of teachers and elders in society.
Resource person Dr Feroz Ahmad Lone focused on the psychological and behavioural dimensions of road safety, stressing the need to inculcate positive attitudes towards traffic rules and safe road practices from an early age.
Meanwhile, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Showkat Ahmed delivered a detailed presentation on traffic rules, road signs, and legal provisions related to road safety. He highlighted common violations leading to accidents and outlined preventive measures to minimise road mishaps.
All speakers unanimously stressed that prevention is the most effective strategy to reduce road accidents and called for coordinated efforts between the education, transport, and police departments to foster a strong road safety culture.
The welcome address was delivered by Deputy Chief Education Officer Aijaz Ahmad Wani, while the vote of thanks was presented by Sajjad Ahmed Bhat. The seminar was attended by senior officers, dignitaries, and a large number of school heads and educational leaders from across the district.
