In a heartwarming example of Kashmiriyat, Muslims in a pargochi village in south Kashmir district of Shopian helped perform the last rites of a 100-year-old Kashmiri Pandit Women amid Heavy Rainfall.

As soon as the news of the death of Pandit Uma Devi wife of Late Prem Nath spread at Pargochi village in Shopian, members of Muslim community came together to help in performing her last rites.

Local sources said that the 100-year-old pandith died on Wednesday at Srinagar. “The deceased cremated as per Hindu rituals by her family members and Muslim neighbours on Thursday afternoon,” they said.

Ravi Ji Bhat, a local Pandith told that Muslims and they are living in prosperity since decades. "For performing last rites, Muslims do help us to make arrangements however the rituals are only being performed by Pandith and Muslims sit at a distance," he said. 

Gulzar Ahmad, a villager said that we help them in conducting last rites, marriages and share joys and sorrows like Muslims. This is what a neighbour is supposed to do.

Pargochi village has a unique position in the area as the villages besides three mosques, a shrine has two Pandit temples and around a dozen Pandit families are living there while many have migrated to different states of India in 1990s.
